Thanks Ronnie. But we have tried almost all measures to make other colonies and Baug authorities listen. Theres always underlying reasons why such vendors are tolerated. Its best left un-disclosed. After we've spoken with our Trust office and Vivaan has recognising the reputational damage they are currently suffering, they have decided to replace the faulty component in the 'overhead dish' which was causing this issue. Mind you, our first complaint to them went out on 10th Aug. They have responded (acted I mean) on 5th Sept after almost daily follow ups from our end. WHO WANTS TO DEAL WITH VIVAAN - PLS BE AWARE OF THESE ANTICS & THE EXCELLENT QUALITY OF SERVICE THEY ENSURE - WE ARE TRULY BREATHLESS (I PAUSE FOR BREATH). God always brings justice to those who somehow fail trying very hard to seek it for themselves. In our case he's a month late, but none the less, I'm sure he has other matters to take care of, which are more important. Another issue that still needs everyone's attention is the Annual Maint Contract, for which Vivaan wants us to shell out Rs 800 per tenant. Lets not forget the Dish TV ads advertising their Annual Maint Contract as Rs 365. Remember Vivaan charged everyone in our society Rs 5500 when Dish TV installaton was only Rs 3000 back in Dec 2006. That too with no free viewing or anything other than empty promises to use superior components and dish equipment than those used by Dish TV. We are all aware that their equipment has failed umpteem times in the past 3 years we have been serviced by Vivaan. Again, we know well that Mitrobay's father Porus manufactures cables, components, etc for Dish so its GHER GGHER NU GAMBHAAR for Mitrobay's family who work on commisions from Vivaan. We have approached Dish TV for these irregularities, by vendors such as Vivaan, but they refuse to step in as we are serviced through their distributor/ vendor & not directly by them. If they know such annomalies occur, why dont they refuse vendors liscences for Disk TV so customers deal with them directly???? DISH TV IS EQUALLY TO BLAME FOR THEIR CUSTOMER'S MISERY. I THOUGHT THIS WAS SUPPOSED TO BE DIRECT TO HOME???? & MIND YOU VIVAAN IS THEIR RECOGNISED DISTRIBUTOR - YOU CAN CALL THEM AND CHECK FOR YOURSELVES??? DISH TV ARE YOU LISTENING, WE WONT REST UNTIL WE GET WHAT IS DUE TO US & OUR MONEY'S WORTH. God be with us. Amin.
Posted by Kersi on 2008-09-05 00:07:30

@Kersi B - I would suggest that you send a written complaint to DiSH TV and also meetup with the management at Godrej Baug and Hilla Towers to see why Vivaan is being tolerated even after they are ripping off customers. Another way would be to write to the editorial section of various papers and news channels to see if any one of them is open to investigating it.

By means of this blog, I would like to bring to everyone's attention, some MAJOR ISSUES we, the tenants of Banaji Building (at Forjett Street) are facing with our cable TV service provider. We have DISH TV in our building. The service provider’s name is Vivaan Consultancy, and their Sales Rep & Partner Mitrobay resides in Banaji Building. Since 2006, the tenants of Banaji Building have been facing frequent Cable TV outage issues. We have also approached our trustees and requested them to take stern action against Mitrobay and Vivaan Consultancy for this VERY BAD service and for cheating us in this entire deal. Dish TV will not support us in these problems as Vivaan is a distributor and they are not directly dealing with us. On more than one occasion we have also found Arun, from Vivaan Consultancy to be very direct and abrupt during his dealings with our tenants. FYI – The tenants of Banaji building were charged a premium fee of Rs 5500 in 2006, when the cost of Disk TV installation was Rs 3000. The reason everyone agreed to pay up is because 1. Most had to go along with a single service provider and 2. Mitrobay being a neighbour had assured special cables and Dish equipment (such as cable pins, distributor equipment) thereby enhancing clarity of cable transmission After expiry of our 1st year of comprehensive warranty Vivaan has refused to renew our Annual Maintenance Contract (AMC) and now wants us to pay for each vist and spare part, as and when it goes bad. In our entire 2 years of dealing with Vivaan, we were supposed to receive over 190 channels via Dish TV, but not on a single day have we recvd anything over 180 channels. These problems have never been looked into by them. They have always displayed a care a dam attitude to all the tenants of our building. Even today, it has been 2 months since our cable isnt working. We receive only 140 channels of late and this isnt being rectified unless we pay for shared infrastructure belonging to Vivaan Cons. They have recently sent select tenants of Banaji an AMC letter asking for Rs 800 as AMC cost when the cost of AMC from Dish TV is Rs 365 per yr. In this too, they don’t cover service of any cables, set top box or dish issues. That is charged extra. I request you to treat your dealings with Vivaan Consultancy with extreme caution so that you do not face the same issues when you sign up with them. Pls check your service contract and cost of AMC before you allow them onto your premises. Don’t fall for verbal promises as most tenants at Banaji did. I believe Vivaan is also providing service to tenants of Godrej baug and Hilla Towers. Plus a few more to add to this. As proof I’d like to show you that Mitrobay never answers customer calls. You may dial him on (M) 9821320029 ( R) He never answers our phone calls or returns our calls and messages left with his office. Neither is his office willing to assist with anything until we pay up in advance. Is this fair, after having charged us such premium for cable installation just 2 years ago.

I have composed a poem on Parsis on occasion of Parsee New Year and I wish to share the same with all my Parsi friends across the globe and in India. The same is given below: Parsis are very warm and nice Good to get along with and also full of spice They are very principled and kind hearted folks Who love to enjoy life and crack jokes An independent lot, they live in clusters Their personalities have a unique lustre They mostly have a passion for good food They hate to sit down and sadly brood A generous lot- they always spare a dime For the poor and the needy, they also spare their time Happy occasions are festive affairs When breakfast and lunch are served with great flair With Patra ni machchi, dhansak, ravo and sweet fried vermicelli Not to forget pulav and spicy chicken curry The dessert normally includes the falooda which is yummy But one has to have enough space left in his /her tummy On Navroze day, they visit the Agiary and offer Jashan Parsis firmly believe that Ahura Mazda will ultimately defeat Ahriman. We wish them all Naya Saal Mubarak and Happy Pateti We are sure they shall enjoy their festival with much fun and gaiety

August 19, 2008 Dear Sir/Madam, My name is Kayras Darayush Irani. I am a 22 year old pre-medical student living in Richmond, British Columbia. I work full time as a first aid attendant at several construction sites around Richmond. I have become a licensed Emergency Medical Responder (EMR) through the Emergency Medical Assistant Licensing Board of British Columbia. In December 2007, I was officially accepted into the first year of medical school at the Medical University of Lodz in Poland. I begin my studies on September 20, 2008. Since my acceptance I have been looking for several ways to finance my education. I have applied for three international loans, four different student lines of credit, and several scholarships, grants and bursaries. Unfortunately, I have not been approved for any of them. Not only have I not received approval, but my credit rating has suffered because I have been actively seeking credit since January 2008. Now I understand that you are a very busy individual and so I will get straight to the point. I am asking your company, employer, or organization for assistance in financing my education. If your company offers students in my situation loans or scholarships, I am in desperate need of it. One option for me right now is to get a co-signor for a $30,000 line of credit for the first year. If I get this co-signor and I get approved for the line of credit, I am still responsible for making interest payments on any of the money I use, while I am still in school. I will be studying full-time while in Poland and I need to put all my focus towards school, not on working or making interest payments. So I can not even have a line of credit because the co-signor will become responsible for making my interest payments. The government loans provided by BC are only available to students studying in Canada. You must trust that I will return to Canada for Medical Licensing as all I have to offer you is my word. All I request is a scholarship or bursary of any value allowing me to pay for my first year of Medical School which is approximately $30,000 USD. I will work hard enough to get good grades so I can pay for the remaining five years with scholarships. Sir/Madam I am running out of options. I need to find some way to pay for medical school. I will not wait an extra year to save up money because I have spent the last four straight years going to school and working to pay for tuition so I can complete my pre-medical studies. All I am asking is that you please give me some support or some guidance. Do you have anything to offer or know people that can help me with my situation? If you require any documentation proving my acceptance into Medical School, I will be happy to forward it to you. Please contact me at 604-214-2914/604-763-7820 or by e-mail: ikayras@hotmail.com. My postal address is: Kayras Darayush Irani 15-12211 Cambie Road Richmond, B.C. V6V 2H8 Thank you very much for your time and I hope to hear from you. Sincerely, Kayras Darayush Irani

THIS ARTICLE WAS ON THE FIRST PAGE OF JAM-E-JAMSHED, NAVROZ EDITION, WRITTEN BY NATASHA DEBOO, A 16 YEAR-OLD GIRL FROM PUNE. CHHAIYE HAME BAWAJI The word 'Parsi' is derived from the word Pars or Persia. Hence, Parsi literally means 'people who have come from Persia'. And what progress we have made since then! From coming as humble refugees from Iran, to building great empires like Tatas and Wadias; from being persecuted in our own motherland, to carving a niche for ourselves in other's hearts in a completely foreign country, Parsis have truly come a very long way. Today, Parsis are one of the most loved communities in the world. Every Hindu, Muslim or Christian is bound to have at least one Parsi friend. And boy! Do the good times roll when Parsis are around! Right from their long noses and fair complexions, to their unique Hindi and witty wisecracks, Parsis are a pleasure to have around you, and are the life of any party. And oh! Do we have our own unique identity! A Parsi can be easily spotted even in a crowded place. All you have to do is find someone whose petticoat is longer than the dress, who has a scarf on her head and a smile on her face. And trust me, it is so heartening to bump into one of them and hear them ask 'Arre dikra, kem chhe? Bachcha kem chhe?' And while others may turn a deaf ear, the Parsi 'maaiji' is ever ready to dole out advice on the common cold, cough and backache, and hand you generations-passed-down, home-made recipes to cure them, which, though awful smelling and tasting, are twice as effective as any medicine in the market. On the other hand, her Parsi husband will come and declare all the 'drama' is unnecessary; stating that 'ek peg Brandy' will cure all your illnesses! Parsis by nature are very inquisitive. Visit any Parsi 'baug' and you will know what I mean. Scores of Parsi 'maaijis' will be sitting in the garden, gossiping about how 'Framroze ni dikri pela Jehangir na dikra saathe fari raheech.' or 'Mare, aaje Veera ne tyaan motti toran chhe. Kai lagan chhe su?' And who can ignore the early morning bargaining with the 'goswallo' and 'machchhiwalli', old Parsi 'maaijis' in their nightgowns and 'bawajis' in their 'Sadra-Legha', arguing in their half-broken Hindi, loud enough to wake up the entire colony - 'Arre kaiko itna bhav bolech, jaraa kami kar. Lootva bethach' or 'Surmai taaji chhe ke? Jara barabar dev. Chori mat kar.' Another distinguishing feature of Parsis is a clean, well-kept house....because for Parsis, Cleanliness is not next to Godliness. It is as important as Godliness itself. And the doorstep will always have 'chalk' and 'toran'. The bigger and more colourful the 'chalk' and heavier the 'toran', the bigger the occasion. And speaking of occasions, no one can celebrate weddings and Navjotes with more fervour and gusto than Parsis, who believe in making merry and living life King-Size! Attend a Parsi wedding, and I am sure you will not leave until you have eaten to your heart's content, had the traditional 'chaato paani', danced like there is no tomorrow, and made friends with every invitee – be it women resplendent in 'garas' or men in spotless 'daglis'. A common sight at these functions is ladies trying to put their match-making abilities to the test by finding out if there is any 'kumari chhokri' in the family who cannot find a better boy than 'aapro Jamsheed'! Another thing Parsis are known for is their cuisine.. Ask any non-Parsi what the first thing is that comes to their mind when they hear the word Parsi, and pat comes the reply 'Dhansak' and 'Patra ni Machchhi'.. 'Akuri' is a favourite among many of my non-Parsi friends, and the 'Lagan nu Custard' is a delicious end to any sumptuous meal. Parsis are the only community who are traditional, as well as modern. Only in Parsi households will you know who Elvis Presley is, and also hear old 'monajats' and 'garbas'. Only in a Parsi household will you know that Tulsi was thrown out of the house in 'Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi', at the same time knowing about Adi Marazban's Gujarati 'nataks'. Yes, we do have our share of problems and controversies (more than enough actually!) but at the end of the day, we all belong to one religion. We all believe in Zarathushtra, Ahura Mazda and Sarosh Yazad. We all believe in the power of Ashem Vohu and Yatha Ahu Vairyo. And that's what finally matters. Being proud of our glorious past, living in the difficult present times, and believing in the bright future awaiting our community. On a lighter note - yes, we are eccentric, yes, we are loud and yes, we will voice our opinion on everything under the sun (whether it concerns us or not, just like the Bengalis do). But finally, it's the warm, loving nature that we all have that sets us apart. Love us, or hate us, but you just CAN'T ignore us! And all said and done, I'm very proud to be a Parsi. Aren't you? ---NATASHA DEBOO

Parsi communities in Hyderabad, Navsari and Surat provide participative support to The AVESTAGENOME Projectä. Avesthagen team to visit Baroda and Ahmedabad in first week of March. Surat, February 13, 2008: Avesthagen Limited, a knowledge-based Life Sciences Company, has successfully initiated the first phase of The AVESTAGENOME Projectä, undertaking blood sample collection of the Parsi population in Hyderabad, Navsari and Surat. This large-scale genomic project aims to study the basis of longevity that is noticed in the Parsi-Zoroastrian population, and also to create a medical database of the community. The AVESTAGENOME Projectä is the brainchild of Dr. Villoo Morawala - Patell, Founder Chairperson and Managing Director of the Bangalore-based Avesthagen Limited. This project is a scientific endeavor that is designed to benefit the entire human race. The results of the research will identify the genetic basis of longevity and for various diseases like cancer, Alzheimer's, Parkinson’s etc. The study will also enable the development of new therapies and drug targets. After completing the blood sample collection from Parsi donors at Hyderabad and at Navsari, the Avesthagen team has started the project at Surat from the 10th February at the Parsi General Hospital. The Surat Parsi Panchayat is lending full support and assistance under the able guidance of its President Mr.Darayas Master. The Trustees, Secretary, Committee members and staff are providing tremendous assistance and encouragement towards the success of this project. The Avesthagen team from Bangalore comprising Doctors, Scientists and Bioinformaticians has set up a center for the collection and processing of the blood samples from the donors. They are being assisted by volunteers from the Parsi community in Surat who are mobilizing members of the community for this worthy cause. The response from the community has been very positive as is evident by the large turnout of donors to date. On completion of the sample collection drive (433 samples) in the twin cities of Hyderabad-Secunderabad in December 2007, Mrs. Gulbanoo Y. Chenoy, President PZASH in a note to Dr. Patell observed “On behalf of the Parsi Zoroastrian Anjuman of Secunderabad and Hyderabad and the parsis of the twin cities, I would like to convey our appreciation of your pioneering work through the Avesthagenome Project. Your deep sense of commitment towards improving the quality of life is reflected by this humane and philanthropic project, which is indeed a matter of great pride for us .We wish you and the Avesthagenome Project all the very best. May the blessings of Ahura Mazda be upon you and your company. Following Hyderabad, the Avesthagen team was in Navsari, from January 6 to13, 2008. The response from the Parsi population of Navsari was most encouraging, and 686 samples were collected. The seriousness of purpose and the professionalism of the AVESTAGENOME team won over the initial scepticism of the Navsari Parsis, and encouraged by Dara Kaikhushru Deboo, an advocate by profession, and a trustee on the boards of several Parsi social, educational and charitable institutions of Navsari, the donors poured in all day enthusiastically to participate in this study. The Parsi youth of Navsari, under the able leadership of Freddy Minoo Kassad, with immense enthusiasm, resourcefulness and energy, facilitated the entire sample collection drive to its successful completion. Navsari Parsis have by and large held on to the exclusivity of their customs, traditions and religious rites. Senior citizens of the community, overcoming their physical difficulties came along with great pride to demonstrate their solidarity with the study. The youth and middle-aged members of the community did not lag behind in their enthusiasm either. According to the octogenarian Mehru, wife of Ervad Ruttonji Seervai, and granddaughter of the famed Parsi scholar Sir Jeevanji Mody, “Every Parsi must come forward and be a part of this scientific study, which is the first of its kind that I have known of, because this will open up new avenues of knowledge and help not only in the alleviation of the medical problems that rack the community members, but of the human race as well.” For 87-year-old Hillamai Edulji Antia, wife of the late Mobedji of the Navsari Atash Behram, “It is a sacred duty to help in such a study. When such highly qualified scientists and experts drawn from different communities are taking such a keen interest in studying our Parsi genetic make-up, and have come all the way from Bangalore to Navsari, what does the little physical discomfort that I have to undergo in coming to the venue matter? _________________________________________________________________ About Avesthagen Limited Avesthagen Limited (www.avesthagen.com) is India’s leading integrated systems biology platform company that focuses on achieving convergence of food, pharma and population genetics leading to predictive preventive and personalized healthcare. I am interested in building an exact Replica of the following in India: http://www.bestirantravel.com/sights/yazd/firetemple.html http://content.answers.com/main/content/wp/en/thumb/1/1e/250px-Yazd_fire_temple.jpg It could be made of white marble and the pool can be lit by hidden lighting. If you ask me why being a Hindu I am interested in this. It is simply because I admire the sublime architecture of that temple. Anyone who would second my suggestion ? Any takers for my idea ?

It was sad to see how many Parsis, oblivious to the fact that the Lookmanji Sweets owner was guilty for the loss of an innocent life, have been patronising Lookmanji sweets during our New Year & prophets birthday. Nothing falls on our deaf ears does it? We believe in having our Lookmanji Jalebis and aghani larvas even if our fellow parsis die at the very place these sweets are made and sold. And we call ourselves a close knit community, a claim I think we must withdraw in honesty. Ask the family of Firdosh Mogrelia how it felt to send their daughter to the Tower of Silence at the tender age of 19. Think; how you would feel, had the same fate befallen your own. Thaen step into Lookmanji and indulge my fellow Parsis. Let forgiveness of this hineous crime come to the corrupt owner, by the hand of God, but as humans, let us not be oblivious to his greed and misdoings. This man has murder and the blood of an innocent on his hands. May God speed justice to the Mogrelia family.

Kalpesh, Thanks for posting the cookbook message. Can we convince you to donate it to us (the community)? If not maybe something like eBay might be a better place to get a fair value and maybe land it in the hands of a diehard Parsi foodie. If nothing else works I would suggest that you try out some of the recipies in there .. maybe you might not want to part with it after you go thgough a finger licking, lip smacking, taste bud tingling gosh no pulav, masala ni daar and kolmi no patio.

Yes, I agree with Karl and request the Parsi community to boycott the sweets of Lookmanji till the owner is brought to books but as we all know money rules. So, he will go scotfree within no time and people will forget about it but only the family of Meher Firdosh Mogrelia will never forgive him. We all know they will not be in a condition to take legal action against the owner but one of us should take action against the culprit and can bring him to books as the same thing is not repeated with some other innocent person. We can all imagine the trauma the family must be going through but only pray to Almighty to give them enough strength to bear the loss of their dear daughter. We Parsis should come together and boycott LOOKMANJI SWEETS.
Posted by Daisy A. D. on 2007-06-26 10:57:00

We request all patrons of Lookmanji sweets (all over India) to boycott their sweet shops until the owner is brought to book and punished for manslaughter. An innocent Parsi girl of 19 years lost her life due to this mans greed. Please help us spread this word......... 25 Jun, 2007 MUMBAI: Two persons died when a partially demolished building near Novelty cinema on Grant Road collapsed because of the rains on Saturday evening. The deceased were identified as Mohammed Alam Khan (43), who was manning a sweet shop in the building (Lookmanji Sweets), and Meher Firdosh Mogrelia (19), who had come to the shop. The incident took place around 7.30 pm, when a portion of the dilapidated Ali Ahmed Manzil on Maulana Shaukat Ali Road at Grant Road gave way following heavy rain. Mogrelia, a resident of Gamadia Colony in Tardeo, had gone to the shop with her mother to place an order for sweets. "The mother had just stepped out when the debris came hurling down. Mogrelia and Khan got trapped inside, while the others managed to escape,"said C Guzder, a local resident who helped with the rescue operation. " It was only around 2.30 am that Mogrelia’s body could be recovered from under the heap of rubble.’’ Nirmal Deshmukh, the Mhada repair board chief officer, said the dilapidated four-storeyed structure did not house anything except the sweet shop, the owner of which had earlier gone to court to challenge a redevelopment proposal for the pre-1940 building. Following the court’s ruling, the upper two floors of the building were being demolished. "The shop was kept open even during the demolition work. On Saturday, triggered by the heavy rains, a portion of the first floor caved in, killing the two,"said Deshmukh. The Mhada official added that the housing board was taking legal advice on the action that will be taken against the shopowner for his negligence. The shop owner of Lookmanji sweets is absconding. The post-mortem report stated that the girl died of suffocation and Khan succumbed to his injuries. The girl’s father who works in a bank in Chennai flew down on Sunday and the last rites were performed in the evening. The police are investigating.

As the group of "neo Parsis" have managed to set up a "new Agiary" somewhere in the suburbs, I would request them to make arrangements so that the likes of Ms. Dhun Baria and her kin can "dispose" off their dead in any which way they may choose & leave the rest of us to continue our traditions at the Doongar Wadi.

HELLO, I AM SENDING THIS COMMUNICATION, THO SINCE THE LAST TEN YEARS IT HAS BEEN MY EXPERIENCE THAT MOST ZOROASTRIANS ARE NOT WORTH CONTACTING, OR THAT THEY ARE SIMPLY GOOD TIME ASSOCIATES. I HAVE HAD A DECLINE IN FORTUNES AFTER A LEGAL BATTLE THAT WAS A BUSINESS ONE . HAVING APPROACHED THE PARSI PANCHAYAT IN MUMBAI AND THE TRUSTEE OF THE AGIARY IN NEW DELHI - MRS.DHUN BAGLI, AND HAVING RECD ONLY FURTHER "BADNAMI" AND NO ASSISTANCE, I AM CONVINCED THAT PARSIS TODAY DO NOT KNOW WHAT THEIR RELIGION STANDS FOR AND THAT TOO MUCH MONEY IS GOING INTO THE POCKETS OF THE WRONG PERSONS. PHILANTHROPHY WHICH WAS ANOTHER NAME FOR ZOROASTRIANISM IS TODAY ABSENT. THE PANCHAYAT TRUSTEES LINE THEIR POCKETS SO THAT 10 GENERATIONS OF THEIR FAMILIES LACK FOR NOTHING. HOSTS OF HOUSING COLONIES BELONGING TO THE PARSI COMMUNITY ARE FILLED WITH ELITE PARSIS WHO ARE ABLE TO DOLE OUT HUGE DONATIONS, WHILE DESERVING PERSONS AWAIT THEIR TURN FOR YEARS. PERSONS LIKE ME WHO HAVE NO ROOF OVER THEIR HEAD, ARE REFUSED EVEN A HEARING, BECAUSE A BAD NAME PRECEDED ME. WHAT CHARITY AND HELP DO PARSIS TALK ABOUT???

Parsi chokrio naa naatak It’s now become really common to hear a relationship break off (especially when both the guy and girl are parsis) Parsi girls have problems for every small thing one can think of. First of all they don’t like to talk, even when we try to just let them know about our feelings, they think its rubbish and just end the topic then and there. When it comes to going to a guy’s place for what we call ‘kaaj karava’ they have a really aggressive approach. They have very interesting questions. Aapre lagan pachi kem rahisoo, bhonu kaun roundhse, mane ketla piosa kharachva aapse if I don’t work, aapre honeymoon par kau jaisoo, tu dastoor chee kee etc etc etc…………… It is really difficult to match up with a bawi’s mind and this seems to be one of the reasons for increase in the number of inter-caste marriages. I am not joking but I can write a whole book on ‘Bawi naa natak’ A recent example can be taken for one of my best friends. My friend named Anosh (name changed) used to earn more that a lac every month. He gets friendly with a girl online and gets serious about her in 1 month’s time. He undergoes the ceremony of ‘Rupiya peria’ goes back to work abroad after fixing the marriage next year. Things get worse when the girl’s family starts asking money for house renovation, new dress/clothes, money for changing the interiors of the flat and the list goes on & on & on. For each of these things the girls family keep on asking 30 to 40 thousand rupees. Atleast in this case I don’t blame the girl as the girls family had premature plans of getting their girl married in such a wealthy family. There are many such instances that I have come across. I don’t say that good parsi females are impossible to find but it is surely difficult to find a good understanding parsi girl/family. I just hope things don’t become worst in the days to come and may all parsis live happily together. (feedback and comments welcomed at iamaparsi@yahoo.com)
